I attended the University of Science and Technology of China where I earned my B.S. However, after accepting some of the uncertainty inherent in the career path, rather than relying on the comfort of certainty, I was able to utilise that as the fundamental philosophy to drive my passion for IT. In the early stages of my career, when I could not program a stable daemon agent running on a customer’s machine for months, I was discouraged. I have continued to find passion every day in where my career has gone since that first job and, looking back, I realise just how impressive the SaaS and cloud computing technology has been in leading the industry for the last two decades.ĭid you always want to work in IT? For the most part, yes. My first role at WebEx was focused on converting Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) web code to PHP code along with the overall company tech stack shifting from a Microsoft server system to Linux. I had no hesitation to join and was excited to be a part of this innovative new realm of technology. This was back in the late 90’s and when I saw the WebEx demo with no software installation required – it was just the browser and allowed you to view another computer’s screen, voice, annotate and more – it was truly an eye-opening experience. What was your first job? I started my career as a PHP Web Developer at WebEx Communications. Last month, it became the first bank in Singapore to offer voice-powered, cashless payments. OCBC Bank has been making strides in modernising its banking services of late. The service is platform-agnostic, mobile-friendly, and can be white-labeled and integrated into existing workflows. The technology features secure messaging, e-signatures, voice layered over content and supports real-time meetings. Moxtra provides financial services companies with an omni-channel client engagement platform that supports collaboration between clients and relationship managers. “It will also ultimately safeguard them from falling victim to phone spoofing and scamming activities.” “This will improve people’s experience of our services without compromising security,” he adds. Wyson suggests this will also help make consumers less vulnerable to fraud, as well. The new app will remove the need for call-back verifications by enabling customers to securely give their financial transaction instructions to their relationship manager. “This has made it difficult for banks to carry out even simple, day-to-day, call-back verifications for confirmation of transactions,” he says. ![]() OCBC Bank Malaysia head of consumer financial service Lim Wyson explains that the result has been to make customers very sceptical about banking by phone. The idea of the app came as a response to a rise in phone-based phishing fraud incidents, in which fraudsters were impersonating bank officials to trick customers into giving them personal information. The bank hopes a successful test, which is expected to last for one year, will enable it to provide its premier customers with the first banking app of its kind in the country. Recently approved by Bank Negara – the country’s central bank – the pilot will take place in a regulatory sandbox environment with real customers and actual financial transactions. Moxtra will help OCBC Bank Malaysia deploy and test its new “Secure Chat Banking” mobile app, writes David Penn at Finovate.

However, once I'd configured MinimServer again, it seemed to work fine, so I ignored it. I was puzzled by this, as I couldn't figure out why MinimServer would find the users %appdata% path if started from the lib folder, but not do so if started from elsewhere. I had already noticed that if you changed the startup directory, MinimServer couldn't find its configuration and prompted for a new one. Is there some reason why you can't configure the Windows service to change directory to the "lib" directory before starting MinimServer? For example, you could do this by running a cmd.exe /c script that sets the directory and then starts MinimServer. If you use a different directory for startup, MinimServer will go into test mode, which isn't supported or recommended. ![]() MinimServer uses the startup directory location to compute the location of its configuration files. And so we would have g of x is equal to four times the square root Instead of an x, I will have a negative x. If I were to replace all of the x's here with a negative x, what would I get? I would get four times the And so what is the equation of g? Well, we just have to rewrite this so that we can write ![]() To a little over four, is equal to that same value. F of negative eight isĮqual to a little over four, but g of eight is equal Or another way to think about it is we could just pick this Of x and we get that value, g at the negative of that value takes on the same function How do we know that? Well, for whenever we take f And a reflection across the y-axis, you can see pretty clearly, that g of x is equal to f of negative x. Well, you can see pretty clearly that this is a reflectionĪcross the y-axis. Is the equation of g? Pause this video and What is the equation of g? So they're not justĪsking it in terms of f. Graphed f, they've graphed g, and they've said f is definedĪs this right over here. We're flipping over the y-axis, and we're flipping over So we could say that g is equal to the negative of f of negative x. You multiply the entireįunction by a negative. Something about the x-axis? Well, we saw it in the example just now. Negative x about the x-axis, it looks like I'm going to get to g. Were to take the reflection of f of negative x, f of Now, that doesn't quite get us to g, but it gets us a little bit closer 'cause it looks like if I So when you input six into it, that would be f of It'd have the straight portion like this. Here, in order to get g? So f of negative x would be a reflection of f about the y-axis. How do we transform f of x, actually, they've labeled it over here, this is f of x right over What is the equation of g in terms of f? So pause this video and We're told functions f, so that's in solid in this blue color, and g dashed, so that's right You'd pick the choice that would actually look like that. So g of x is going to look something like that, a reflection about the x-axis. ![]() And so g of x would beĪ reflection of f of x about the x-axis. You could see that whateverį of a certain value is, g of that value wouldīe the negative of that. ![]() So it's going to be equal to negative two. So one way to think about it is we can see that f of zero is two, but g of zero is going toīe the negative of that. So instead of it being f of negative x, it's equal to the negative of f of x. X is equal to, notice, all of this right over here, that was our definition of f of x. All right, so in this situation, they didn't replace the x And then they say what is the graph of g? And so pause this video and at least try to sketch it out in your And if you're doing this on Khan Academy, you'd pick the choice So g is going to look something like this. And we've already talkedĪbout it in previous videos that if you replace your Same thing as f of zero 'cause a negative zero is zero. What would g of zero be? Well, that would be the Same thing as f of two, which is zero, so it What would g of negative two be? Well, that would be the ![]() G of negative four is going to be equal to f of the negative of negative four, which is equal to f of four. Negative four to be equal to two because, once again, g of negative four, we could write it over here. That f of four is equal to two, so we would expect g of So whatever the value ofį is at a certain value, we would expect g to take on that value at the negative of that. Over that g of x is equal to f of negative x. Try to think about it, at least in your head. What g would look like without having any choices, What is the graph of g? And on Khan Academy, it's multiple choice, but I thought for the sake of this video, it'd be fun to think about Of exercises on Khan Academy that deal with reflections of functions. For example, if an electron and an antielectron appear near the warp drive, one of the particles would get trapped by the mass and this results in an imbalance. To create negative energy, a warp drive would use a huge amount of mass to create an imbalance between particles and antiparticles. Physicists have never observed negative mass, so that leaves negative energy as the only option. The warp drive would require either negative mass – a theorized type of matter – or a ring of negative energy density to work. Credit: Tokamac/Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA A negative energy problemĪlcubierre’s warp drive would work by creating a bubble of flat spacetime around the spaceship and curving spacetime around that bubble to reduce distances. This 2–dimensional representation shows how positive mass curves spacetime (left side, blue earth) and negative mass curves spacetime in an opposite direction (right side, red earth). ![]() Proxima Centauri here we come, right? Unfortunately, Alcubierre’s method of compressing spacetime had one problem: it requires negative energy or negative mass. Alcubierre showed that the warp drive from “Star Trek” was in fact theoretically possible. In theory, this approach does not contradict the laws of relativity since you are not moving faster than light in the space around you. Then, moving through spacetime at your maximum speed of one meter per second, you would be able to reach point B in about one second. However, let’s say you could somehow compress the space between you and point B so that the interval is now just one meter. If you are standing at point A and can travel one meter per second, it would take 10 seconds to get to point B. So, what does that mean? Imagine the distance between two points is 10 meters (33 feet). In 1994, Miguel Alcubierre, a Mexican theoretical physicist, showed that compressing spacetime in front of the spaceship while expanding it behind was mathematically possible within the laws of General Relativity. What if a starship could compress space in front of it while expanding spacetime behind it? “Star Trek” took this idea and named it the warp drive. Early science fiction writers John Campbell and Asimov saw this warping as a way to skirt the speed limit. This curvature is what you feel as gravity and why many spacefaring heroes worry about “getting stuck in” or “falling into” a gravity well. General relativity also describes how mass and energy warp spacetime – hefty objects like stars and black holes curve spacetime around them. General Relativity states that space and time are fused and that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. Physicists’ current understanding of spacetime comes from Albert Einstein’s theory of General Relativity. Credit: AllenMcC/Wikimedia Commons Compression and expansion This 2-dimensional representation shows the flat, unwarped bubble of spacetime in the center where a warp drive would sit surrounded by compressed spacetime to the right (downward curve) and expanded spacetime to the left (upward curve). I am now a theoretical physicist and study nanotechnology, but I am still fascinated by the ways humanity could one day travel in space. As a kid, I read as many of those stories as I could get my hands on. In Issac Asimov’s Foundation series, humanity can travel from planet to planet, star to star or across the universe using jump drives. But so far, faster-than-light travel is possible only in science fiction. If humanity ever wants to travel easily between stars, people will need to go faster than light. It would take just 20 seconds to go from Los Angeles to New York City at that speed, but it would take the solar probe about 6,633 years to reach Earth’s nearest neighboring solar system. ![]() The fastest ever spacecraft, the now-in-space Parker Solar Probe will reach a top speed of 450,000 mph. It is about 4.25 light-years away, or about 25 trillion miles (40 trillion km). The closest star to Earth is Proxima Centauri. Faster than light travel is the only way humans could ever get to other stars in a reasonable amount of time. Who knows? I’m just glad he’s in a good spot.
